Khlo Kardashian is worried about Scott Disicks mental state when hes not around his kids, according to a sneak-peek trailer for Sundays new episode of Keeping up With The Kardashians.

During the clip, Scottopens up to Khlo and says ever since Kourtney took the kids for the week, he feels anxious and he needs to book his time up to keep his mind off his family.

This usually means making club appearances for money.

Khlo makes the point this may not be the best choice for him at the moment and suggests he finds other ways to make money.

Im going to be honest, Im not the biggest Scott Disick fan. I think he was kinda funny for a little a few seasons back, but hes now mostly an annoying whiner.

President-elect Donald Trump has said that he does not believe the planet is warming as a result of human activity despite the research-backed consensus reached long ago by researchers across the globe.

He tweeted in 2012 that “the concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make US manufacturing non-competitive.” More recently, Trump has pledged to roll back President Barack Obama’s Clean Power Plan a set of rules that requires states to substantially reduce their emissions over the next few decades.

Right now, his transition website says, “America’s environmental agenda will be guided by true specialists in conservation, not those with radical political agendas.”

The implication seems to be that researchers who accept climate science will have no place in his Environmental Protection Agency, or perhaps his government.

So what will Trump’s actual environmental policies look like? Here’s what we know.

EBELL copy

Myron Ebell Competitive Enterprise Institute

Trump has picked a man named Myron Ebell to oversee the EPA transition.

Ebell is not a scientist and has no degrees or qualifications in climate science. But he serves as director of global warming and environmental policy at the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), a libertarian advocacy group in Washington, DC.

In practice, that means he spends his time rejecting and trying to discredit scientists who work to understand the global climate.

Ebell believes climate scientists are part of a coordinated ‘global warming movement’

In an interview with Business Insider in August, Ebell repeatedly referred to climate scientists as “global warming alarmists” and suggested that climate research is in fact an arm of a coordinated political movement.

“I think that the global warming movement has three parts,” he said. “One is to exaggerate the rate of warming, one is to exaggerate the potential impacts of warming and how soon they may occur, and the third is to underestimate wildly the costs of reducing our emissions by the magical amount that they have picked.”

Business Insider spoke with several climate scientists who described Ebell as a kind of gadfly someone’s whose views they must occasionally stoop to address in forums and debates where he’s brought in to represent a discredited anti-climate-change perspective, but not a particularly serious person.

“He doesn’t really know anything about science,” said Gavin Schmidt, director of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies and a top Earth scientist at NASA who has faced off with Ebell in the past. “He uses science like a talisman.”

Ebell’s technique, Schmidt said, is to point toward “some little fact” and use it to extrapolate some larger irrelevant and scientifically incorrect point.

Even if Ebell’s scientific claims may not sit well with actual scientists, there are those who have found his perspective valuable.

CEI used to rely significantly on funding from ExxonMobil. As The Washington Post reports, it now receives funding from Donors Trust.

You know, [Trump] said he was going to drain the swamp in Washington, and instead he’s put Myron Ebell a swamp rat, a DC insider lobbyist in charge of the transition at the EPA.

“The Virginia-based organization,” Post reporter Brady Dennis wrote of Donors Trust, “which is not required by law to disclose its contributors, is staffed largely by people who have worked for Koch Industries or nonprofit groups supported by the conservative Koch brothers.”

Good news for deniers, terrible news for environmentalists

Speaking with Business Insider in August before his selection, Ebell outlined his views on the appropriate direction for the EPA.

“When economies get richer, they not only make people wealthier, they generally provide immense environmental benefits,” he said. “And so if you actually believe, if someone actually believes that global warming is a crisis that must be addressed … I think it would be much better to free up the economy and get rid of the EPA rules and a lot of the Department of Energy programs and let the economy boom forward.”

Ebell’s fellow professional climate science skeptics seem cheered by his selection.

“Ebell is an old friend of mine who works on climate and energy issues at the Competitive Enterprise Institute,” wrote Breitbart’s James Delingpole, who regularly publishes posts trying to discredit climate science, in a November 9 article declaring that “the left just lost the war on climate change.”

“The fact that he’s an old friend of mine probably tells you all you need to know about where he stands on global warming,” Delingpole wrote.

He concluded: “Yup, greenies. That climate change gravy train you’ve been riding these last four decades looks like it’s headed for a major, Atlas-Shrugged-style tunnel incident.”

Dan Lashof, COO of the environmental group NextGen Climate America, was as concerned as Delingpole was thrilled.

“Myron Ebell is a libertarian ideologue,” he told Business Insider. “Having him lead the transition team at the EPA is literally putting a tobacco lobbyist in charge of America’s lung protection agency. It’s not normal.”

Lashof said he expects a Trump administration with a Ebell-staffed EPA to work hard to roll back environmental regulations just as the president-elect’s website promises.

“You know, [Trump] said he was going to drain the swamp in Washington, and instead he’s put Myron Ebell a swamp rat, a DC insider lobbyist in charge of the transition at the EPA,” Lashof said.

Death to ‘politically correct technologies’

You won’t hear any disagreement from the right that Ebell will push for killing environmental regulations to benefit fossil fuel businesses.

Patrick Michaels, who works for the libertarian Cato Institute in Washington, DC and, like Ebell, has made a reputation for rejecting the consensus on climate science told Business Insider that Ebell’s selection represents a victory for the idea that removing air pollution rules would in fact lead to cleaner air.

“Rich societies are cleaner,” he said. “If you want efficient technologies to come online, the best way to do that is to have a vibrant economy, because that capital will be directed toward producing things with less energy and producing things that use less energy to appeal to consumers.”

This position is intolerable to Lashof.

“This is putting somebody who just denies basic scientific facts in charge of a federal agency,” Lashof said. “We will lead a resistance against the federal government. We will work with state governments to push back and keep progress going based on state policy.”

He said he’s confident there will be economic limits on Ebell’s and Trump’s ability to fight clean energy.

Solar and wind power “are actually cheaper than continuing to run existing coal in a lot of locations,” Lashof said. “That depends to some extent on a federal tax credit, which early indications suggest that Congress and the Trump administration are not likely to try to roll back.”

Both Ebell and Michaels scoff at the idea that either solar or wind power will play a significant role in the energy future of the country. (Michaels calls them “politically correct technologies.”)

“I think in particular I would say the emphasis that the global warming movement or alarmist community or whatever you want to call them on renewables, namely solar and wind, is really short-sighted,” Ebell said. “I think that those two technologies, particularly wind, are dead ends.”

It’s worth noting though that Ebell may have tweaked his public position on this issue in the last couple of months. He told National Geographic after the election that “we love wind and solar.” But he clarified that he doesn’t think the government should get involved in supporting either.

Ebell argued that any reduction in US emissions in the Obama era is the result of a “stagnant economy,” not policies designed to push renewable energies.

“We would like to get rid of all of this stuff,” he said. “And we think that the use of energy will become more efficient just through the innovations that will occur in free markets when people are allowed to invest their money in things that can make money.”

How does climate denial even work?

Asked to explain why someone would reject the scientific consensus that humans are dangerously warming the planet, Michaels simply denied that any such consensus exists.

For evidence that climate change has been largely falsified, he pointed to an October 28 article by the reporter Paul Voosen in the journal Science.

The argument he drew from the Voosen article is a good example of the approach professional climate deniers like himself and Ebell use to undermine science, so it’s worth taking a minute to think about.

“Take a look at the Voosen piece and read between the lines,” Michaels said.

Michaels argued that it shows the many models researchers use to understand the climate have been rigged with “fudge factors” to produce incorrect results, and that “scientists are deciding a priori what the answer is.”

Here’s what Voosen actually reported:

“For years, climate scientists had been mum in public about their ‘secret sauce’; What happened in the models stayed in the models. The taboo reflected fears that climate contrarians would use the practice of tuning [models to real world results] to seed doubt about models and, by extension, the reality of human driven warming. ‘The community became defensive,’ [scientist Bjorn] Stevens says. ‘It was afraid of talking about things that they thought could be unfairly used against them.’ …

“But modelers have come to realize that disclosure could reveal that some tunings [of models] are more deft or realistic than others. It’s also vital for scientists who use the models in specific ways.”

Voosen’s article does not state or suggest any evidence of rigging to falsify warming. Rather, he reports that there has been an effort to bring models in line with observed reality, and that a transparency movement is enabling scientists to more rigorously audit each others’ models for quality.

But Michaels finds a nearly opposite interpretation.

With Ebell on the rise, the question than becomes: Are these sorts of denials valid?

“It’s complete bollocks. You can quote me on that. It’s just rubbish,” Schmidt said of Michaels’ argument.

“So it’s basically a shoot the messenger strategy that they’ve been pursuing for decades, but most actually scientists have been ignoring them for about the same amount of time.”

Schmidt said there is “enormous consensus” among scientists about three points: Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases will warm the planet, human activity is increasing their presence in the atmosphere, and that activity is responsible for almost all or all of the warming the planet has seen since the 19th century. This is true.

Mark Serreze, director of the National Snow and Ice Data Center, said there’s no longer a serious question to ask about the validity of climate change.

“We understand the physics of what’s happening pretty well now,” he said. “If you load the atmosphere with a greenhouse gas, it will induce a warming. It’s all based on an understanding of how electromagnetic radiation and matter interact. It’s a very mature science. If you are going to deny that somehow, you’d have to deny that your microwave oven works.”

He added that he invites people to come to the NSIDC to download snow and ice data and do their own analysis if they want, though deniers rarely take him up on it.

“People like Michaels and Ebell have been saying that climate modeling isn’t science for decades,” Schmidt said. “And what they really mean is, ‘We don’t like the outputs from those climate models, and so therefore instead of trying to demonstrate why they’re wrong, we’re just going to try to dismiss them out of hand.’

“So it’s basically a shoot-the-messenger strategy that they’ve been pursuing for decades, but most actual scientists have been ignoring them for about the same amount of time.”

‘Nothing he does affects the science’

Schmidt works for NASA, and Serreze works for the NSIDC. That means they rely on federal funds for their research. Trump has made it clear that scientists who accept the consensus position that human activity is causing climate change will not be welcome in his government, or at least his EPA. And his selection of Ebell only reinforces that point. But neither researcher said he expects to lose his ability to pursue science.

“I’d be lying if I said that there wasn’t some level of concern,” Schmidt said. “But the federal government is a very, very large place. And the number of appointees is very small.”

“During the [George W.] Bush administration, we had climate skeptics rewriting reports and trying to control what’s said to the media,” he added. “But the planet kept warning. We kept reporting on it. We kept improving the science that underlies our understanding of why it’s changing. And we will work to continue to do so.”

Serreze said: “I think we remain optimistic that wise heads are going to prevail here. There were concerns in the previous Republican administration under George W. Bush. We got through that. I’m confident we’ll get through this.”

As for Ebell’s newfound power to push his views onto scientists, Schmidt said he’s not overly concerned in part because the EPA has never done much research on its own, but also because Ebell lacks the wherewithal to do so.

“He’s not a serious person when it comes to the science,” Schmidt said. “Nothing he does affects the science.”

One of the most groundbreaking, critically acclaimed, and delightful video games of 2014 began in a highly unlikely place Anchorage, Alaska.

A scene from “Never Alone.” Photos by North One Games/E-Line Media.

It’s called “Never Alone” (or “Kisima Ingitchuna”). And it wasn’t developed by Nintendo, Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, or any of the other big game studios.

It was the brainchild of the Cook Inlet Tribal Council (CITC) a nonprofit community support organization for Alaska Natives and their families.

Many Alaska Native communities are struggling to hold on to their identities in the 21st century.

As more and more Alaska Natives move out of traditional communities and into urban areas, indigenous languages are disappearing and with them, traditional knowledge. Many don’t have a choice because climate change threatens to erode and, in some cases, even destroy native towns and villages around the state.

For many, life in Alaska’s cities is hardly easy. According to Amy Fredeen, executive vice president and chief financial officer of the CITC, Alaska Native youth in Anchorage are plagued by high dropout and suicide rates. Passing traditional knowledge down under these conditions becomes all the more challenging.

The council saw “Never Alone” as both a way of becoming more financially self-sufficient and a necessary new method of transferring cultural knowledge from one generation to the next.

“We saw video games as a way to connect to our youth in a place where they’re already at,” Fredeen told Upworthy. The group also hoped that sales of the video game would help reduce their dependence on federal grant money.

There was a problem, however: No one on the CITC had ever made a video game before.

Undaunted, the council cold-called E-Line Media, a Seattle-based entertainment and video game development company with a message: “Come to Anchorage.”

“What was funny is they actually came up and tried to talk us out of it.”

According to Fredeen, E-Line urged the council to approach the project with caution: Video game development is a highly risky business and particularly challenging for a nonprofit with limited cash supplies.

But the group was determined and the developers were impressed.

E-Line signed on. And off they went.

The team started by analyzing how indigenous characters were typically portrayed in video games. What they found was upsetting and unsurprising.

“It ran the gamut from being terrible stereotypes to just appropriation,” Fredeen said.

The group found that not only were native video game characters exceedingly rare, but when they did appear, it was often as sidekicks exhibiting a mishmash of cultural signifiers cobbled together from various and unrelated communities or, worse, as one-dimensional villains.

“Some of them were really almost obscene,” Fredeen said.

In contrast, “Never Alone” features an Alaska Native main character and is based largely on a traditional Iupiaq story.

E-Line chief creative officer Sean Vesce teaches Minnie Gray, an Alaska Native elder, storyteller, and consultant on the game, how to play.

Nuna, the game’s hero, teams up with an arctic fox to find the source of the blizzard that’s threatening her community. Players explore themes of resourcefulness, cooperation, and the transfer of knowledge from one generation to the next through the beautifully rendered gameplay.

“When I saw that come to life on screen, when they were using the scrimshaw in an animated way to tell a story, it brought tears to my eyes.” Amy Fredeen

E-Line credits the game’s part-Iupiaq lead writer, Ishmael Hope, for helping ensure that Alaska Native voices were front and center in the development process.

We want to be culturally appropriate without cultural appropriation,” Matt Swanson, one of the game’s producers told Upworthy.

That meant checking their egos at the door and questioning some assumptions they didn’t even realize they had.

According to Swanson, the original villain of the game was slated to be a raven before their collaborators pointed out that wouldn’t make sense in an Alaska Native context.

“As Westerners, we have lots of stories where [the raven] is a trickster character, and things like that. And they pushed back on that and said, ‘Look, that’s not really culturally appropriate. The raven in our culture is a much more sort of sacred character.'”

It was a surprise to the E-Line team, which highlighted the importance of listening and their role as students in the story development process.

In addition to the main game, “Never Alone” features hours of documentary footage of Alaska Native elders and community members sharing traditional stories, explaining customs, and passing down knowledge.

The team was initially worried that the footage which the player has the option of watching would disrupt the gameplay but later received tons of positive feedback on the feature.

For Fredeen, the moment she knew “Never Alone” was going to be something special was when she saw the first cutscene rendered entirely in serialized scrimshaw.

Scrimshaw is a traditional form of bone or ivory carving. According to Fredeen, while scrimshaw today is most often done in single panel, it was traditionally used in Alaska Native communities as a multi-panel, serial storytelling device.

“When I saw that come to life on screen, when they were using the scrimshaw in an animated way to tell a story, it brought tears to my eyes,” Fredeen said. “The instant I saw that, I knew the team was listening to who we were as a people and how we really connected with each other.”

The game debuted to terrific reviews and has since won some very big awards.

Minnie Gray in the recording studio.

Its effects are being felt far beyond Alaska’s borders as well.

“After the game launched, we’ve been getting this incredible response from people of all different backgrounds on how getting to see an indigenous main character in a game, and seeing cultural representation in a game has resonated with them,” Swanson said.

For Fredeen, the importance of that representation can’t be overstated and was evident from the first time she saw a group of Alaska Native youth encounter the game.

“When they saw the video game on the screen, and when they saw a character that looked like them and the dress was familiar to them, and they saw their community members on the video with the video game, you could just see the pride on their faces.”

The game is expected to make money a big deal in the video game world and the team continues to be impressed with its success.

It’s been amazing all around,” Fredeen said.

“People just get excited in Alaska,” she added. “… They’re excited to see something that was made with Alaskans.”

1. Sinéad O’Connor has published an open letter to Miley Cyrus on her site.

She begins. “I wasn’t going to write this letter, but today i’ve been dodging phone calls from various newspapers who wished me to remark upon your having said in Rolling Stone your “Wrecking Ball” video was designed to be similar to the one for “Nothing Compares” … So this is what I need to say … And it is said in the spirit of motherliness and with love.”

2. “I am happy to hear I am somewhat of a role model for you and I hope that because of that you will pay close attention to what I am telling you.”

3. O’Connor reminds Miley of why she created her iconic look.

“You also said in Rolling Stone that your look is based on mine. The look I chose, I chose on purpose at a time when my record company were encouraging me to do what you have done. I felt I would rather be judged on my talent and not my looks. I am happy that I made that choice, not least because I do not find myself on the proverbial rag heap now that I am almost 47 yrs of age.. which unfortunately many female artists who have based their image around their sexuality, end up on when they reach middle age.”

4. And she counsels Miley to think of the impression she is sending to her peers, and other women.

“Whether we like it or not, us females in the industry are role models and as such we have to be extremely careful what messages we send to other women. The message you keep sending is that it’s somehow cool to be prostituted.. it’s so not cool Miley.. it’s dangerous. Women are to be valued for so much more than their sexuality. We aren’t merely objects of desire. I would be encouraging you to send healthier messages to your peers.. that they and you are worth more than what is currently going on in your career. Kindly fire any motherf—er who hasn’t expressed alarm, because they don’t care about you.”

7. Read the full letter below:

Dear Miley,
I wasn’t going to write this letter, but today i’ve been dodging phone calls from various newspapers who wished me to remark upon your having said in Rolling Stone your “Wrecking Ball” video was designed to be similar to the one for “Nothing Compares” … So this is what I need to say … And it is said in the spirit of motherliness and with love.
I am extremely concerned for you that those around you have led you to believe, or encouraged you in your own belief, that it is in any way “cool” to be naked and licking sledgehammers in your videos. It is in fact the case that you will obscure your talent by allowing yourself to be pimped, whether it’s the music business or yourself doing the pimping.
Nothing but harm will come in the long run, from allowing yourself to be exploited, and it is absolutely NOT in ANY way an empowerment of yourself or any other young women, for you to send across the message that you are to be valued (even by you) more for your sexual appeal than your obvious talent.
I am happy to hear I am somewhat of a role model for you and I hope that because of that you will pay close attention to what I am telling you.
The music business doesn’t give a sh– about you, or any of us. They will prostitute you for all you are worth, and cleverly make you think its what YOU wanted.. and when you end up in rehab as a result of being prostituted, “they” will be sunning themselves on their yachts in Antigua, which they bought by selling your body and you will find yourself very alone.
None of the men oggling you give a sh– about you either, do not be fooled. Many’s the woman mistook lust for love. If they want you sexually that doesn’t mean they give a f— about you. All the more true when you unwittingly give the impression you don’t give much of a f— about yourself. And when you employ people who give the impression they don’t give much of a f— about you either. No one who cares about you could support your being pimped.. and that includes you yourself.
Yes, I’m suggesting you don’t care for yourself. That has to change. You ought be protected as a precious young lady by anyone in your employ and anyone around you, including you. This is a dangerous world. We don’t encourage our daughters to walk around naked in it because it makes them prey for animals and less than animals, a distressing majority of whom work in the music industry and its associated media.
You are worth more than your body or your sexual appeal. The world of showbiz doesn’t see things that way, they like things to be seen the other way, whether they are magazines who want you on their cover, or whatever.. Don’t be under any illusions.. ALL of them want you because they’re making money off your youth and your beauty.. which they could not do except for the fact your youth makes you blind to the evils of show business. If you have an innocent heart you can’t recognise those who do not.
I repeat, you have enough talent that you don’t need to let the music business make a prostitute of you. You shouldn’t let them make a fool of you either. Don’t think for a moment that any of them give a flying f— about you. They’re there for the money.. we’re there for the music. It has always been that way and it will always be that way. The sooner a young lady gets to know that, the sooner she can be REALLY in control.
You also said in Rolling Stone that your look is based on mine. The look I chose, I chose on purpose at a time when my record company were encouraging me to do what you have done. I felt I would rather be judged on my talent and not my looks. I am happy that I made that choice, not least because I do not find myself on the proverbial rag heap now that I am almost 47 yrs of age.. which unfortunately many female artists who have based their image around their sexuality, end up on when they reach middle age.
Real empowerment of yourself as a woman would be to in future refuse to exploit your body or your sexuality in order for men to make money from you. I needn’t even ask the question.. I’ve been in the business long enough to know that men are making more money than you are from you getting naked. It’s really not at all cool. And it’s sending dangerous signals to other young women. Please in future say no when you are asked to prostitute yourself. Your body is for you and your boyfriend. It isn’t for every spunk-spewing dirtbag on the net, or every greedy record company executive to buy his mistresses diamonds with.
As for the shedding of the Hannah Montana image.. whoever is telling you getting naked is the way to do that does absolutely NOT respect your talent, or you as a young lady. Your records are good enough for you not to need any shedding of Hannah Montana. She’s waaaaaaay gone by now.. Not because you got naked but because you make great records.
Whether we like it or not, us females in the industry are role models and as such we have to be extremely careful what messages we send to other women. Kindly fire any motherf—er who hasn’t expressed alarm, because they don’t care about you.

Private equity executives are more apt to dine at Daniel or Per Se than T.G.I. Friday’s or P.F. Chang’s. But lately they have been feasting on acquisitions of traditionally middle-market, suburban, value chain restaurants and so-called quick service restaurants (QSRs), like Chipotle and Chop’t, as consumer spending on food consumed outside of the home has reached record highs.

U.S. consumers now spend a record-high 85.4 cents on food and beverages consumed outside of the home for every dollar they spend at the supermarket, according to a May research note by Andrew Wilkinson of Miller Tabak. This signals that, despite payroll tax increases, U.S. consumers are more willing to spend their disposable income dining out at restaurants. In other words, instead of baking a cake at home, families are now celebrating birthdays at Chili’s — literally.

Shares of Brinker, the parent company of Chili’s and other chains, started the year at around $30 and have steadily climbed to about $40 over the last five months. Shares of Darden, which owns chains like Red Lobster and Olive Garden, have followed a similarly consistent trajectory, going from around $44 in January to more than $52 in recent days.

The value restaurant chain and franchise sector has typically been ridiculed for performing weakly in poor economic times. However, the relative success of these chains lately, coupled with the increase in consumer spending on dining out, suggests that investment thesis might be past its expiration date.

“There definitely was a dark period where dining out was replaced by food prepared in the home, but we are seeing a change in that,” said Daniel Bonoff, partner at New York–based private equity firm Goode Partners, whose portfolio includes Rosa Mexicano and Chuy’s restaurants. “We believe the restaurant sector is a great place to be making money right now. There’s also been sort of a Darwinian survival of the fittest where really new concepts are emerging on the scene and growing really rapidly.”

New concepts getting noticed by private equity firms include more ethnic food chains and value restaurants. Centerbridge and Angelo Gordon last year bought P.F. Chang’s and Benihana, respectively.

For his part, Bonoff says Chuy’s has turned out to be one of Goode Partners’ best investments. It took the Tex-Mex chain, which has locations throughout the South and is reminiscent of the national brand Chevy’s, public last summer at $13 a share. Just this week its stock reached more than $32.50. The chain has the secret sauce that private equity wants in restaurant deals right now: quick service with an ethnic component.

Bonoff said the most desired chain plays in the private equity market are “places that are trying to be the next Chipotle.”

“Mediterranean, Asian — a lot of that serves the purpose of getting high-quality, healthier foods than your greasy burger, but also doing it in an efficient way,” Bonoff said. “It’s not just people eating out there for dinner, but you can get a lunch day part as well.”

The hot market is creating fierce competition for deals among “strategic acquirers,” companies like Brinker and Darden. On Wednesday, for instance, Houston-based private hospitality company Landry’s Restaurants bought the steak and seafood chain Mastro’s.

Some have actually started to call a bubble given how rich deals are being valued at and how fast they are happening.

“Restaurant investing is one of the most cyclical segments in private equity, and in the time frame where the world is very dark, there were very few firms actively looking in the restaurant sector,” Bonoff said. “Now it’s happened very quickly. Money has flown in. Some might say this is a sign of a bubble in restaurants across the board.”

At some point in our lives, we all have to buy a car. Whether it be brand new or second hand, we usually end up going through a dealer. This list is designed to help you save money by not being ripped off by the little tricks that dealers use to maximize their profit and your loss. Be sure to give other tips for saving on a new car in the comments.

Ab8F7C6D40463872005B04Ae48D83E34.Jpg

This is the most obvious of ways a car dealer makes a profit. The difference between the dealer cost (invoice) and MSRP is typically 5-10%. This may not sound like a ton of mark-up, but when you consider that you’re dealing with thousands of dollars then the profit margin could be quite significant. For example, a car that a dealer pays $30,000 could generate a profit of around three-thousand dollars. And then multiple that times a few hundred cars a month, and a car dealer could make almost a million dollars a month on mark-up alone.

Used-Car-Dealer.Jpg

When a dealer sells a new car (not a pre-owned), the sale is RDR’d to the manufacturer (basically informing the manufacturer that one of their units has been sold). Once this sale has been verified, the manufacturer pays the dealer a set amount of money for “hold-back” and advertising. This amount is listed on the invoice in a less-than-obvious location and is often abbreviated/written in a way that a customer will be unable to figure out the information in the event he sees the actual invoice. For example: if an educated customer will only pay a certain percentage over invoice, then that percentage is calculated by the “invoice” price before any “hold-back” or advertising is deducted. Once the deal is funded and the contract is RDR’d, the manufacturer will send the dealer a pretty substantial amount of money (I’ve seen some “hold-back” and advertising fees as much as $1500).

Patriotic Car Dealer.Jpg

When a person trades in a car, the dealer will surely attempt to undervalue the trade to make an immediate profit, and then a profit later when the trade is sold. The immediate profit comes from what is called the ACV (actual cash value). If a trade is really worth $11,500 (ACV) and the dealer only shows the customer $10, 500, then there is an immediate thousand dollar profit from the start. The trick is to know where a dealer gets his appraisal information (the most common are Black Book and Manheim Auction Reports. Dealers will RARELY match Kelly Blue Book and NADA) and work off that number to get a fair value for your trade. The other means the dealer will make a profit is when he sells your trade in. There are many financial and credit factors that can generate a profit from your trade. Simple example: your trade is bought from the dealer for $10,000. The dealer will then send your car through service and detail and make sure it is prepped for retail and safe to drive (he’ll also insure the car in most instances). Your old car will now be put up for sale for $13,999. Now, here’s where many factors come is based on the potential buyers situation. The lenders will “book out” a car based on a standard process (typically, a program called Dealer-Track will provide access to NADA for the banks and the dealerships to see how much a car can be sold for). Banks will loan a certain percentage of the cars loan value based on the customer’s credit worthiness. Let’s say the car “books out” for $13,125 (this is 100%), and the potential buyer has great credit. The lender will loan up to 135% of the cars value for that customer. Which means the dealer can sell the car to that well-qualified customer for over $17,000 and make a nice profit ($7,000). On the other hand, if a person has poor credit, then the banks will loan less than 100% and the dealer will have to take the deal at a lesser profit, or the customer will have to put some cash down to generate a profit the dealer will agree to.

Large Dealer25.Jpg

New and Used cars are “packed.” This is a number that is immediately added to the car (in addition to the already existing mark-up). This is typically money that goes to pay the owner. The amount of pack varies between dealerships, new, used, etc, but I have never seen a “pack” less than $500. I’ve even seen some cars “packed” $1500. Let’s say a dealership sell 250 cars in one month, and the average “pack” is $1000: the owner makes a nice quarter million dollars a month on “pack” alone (3 million a year- not a bad salary).

Customer Service.Jpg

This is the biggest farce of them all. This is a dollar amount the dealer says goes to pay for the process of handling your paperwork, tag work, title work, tax work, loaner car, etc. The doc fees will fluctuate from dealer to dealer (I’ve seen $299 to $699). This is a legitimate process that does require paying a handful of people for their work, but- in no way does it cost anywhere close to the amount they’re charging. Most of the paperwork can be done is a few minutes and over the phone, internet, fax, etc. The overage naturally goes into management’s pockets.

Msl.Sticker.350.Jpg

Bad bad business practice right here. A “bump sticker” is legitimate-looking sticker that the dealer places next to the manufacturer’s window sticker with a higher priced MSRP than the actual MSRP. The dealer will try and justify this added cost by suggesting the car had some special product applied to the paint or the fabric, or some window etching was done, or they’ll try and itemize all the work that needed to be done to get the car prepped for retail (insurance, gas, detail, service, PDI- [post delivery inspection], etc), or they might try and tell you that this car had additional mark up because it’s a “hot item” and people are paying over retail for that car. It’s all a joke and educationally insulting. The theory is once the “bump sticker” is negotiated away, then the customer will feel that he got a pretty substantial discount, when- in fact- he’s simply paid full MSRP for the car: not a very good deal.

Wacontractform.Jpg

When a customer agrees to numbers, they will have to go the F and I office (Finance and Insurance) to finalize the car deal. This is where all the legal forms are signed, etc. However, this is also where a lot of money is made for the dealership. One of the big money makers in the car business comes from the sale of Extended Service Contracts (extended warranty). I would say nine out of ten extended warranties will cover things that are never likely to break. Additionally, you’ll need to pay a deductible (on top of the $1400 dollars you just paid for the warranty) each time you try and use the warranty. The mark up for this product is typically mandated by the state you live in, but you can expect to pay twice its original value. One good thing about an extended service agreement is that most of them are refundable (prorated based on what you haven’t used). Additionally, a certified pre-owned model is typically a better bet than an extended service agreement (because it’s backed by the manufacturer’s name. Extended warranties are typically backed by the private dealer with a lot less public reputation at stake).

Gap.Jpg

Now this is a product that I strongly recommend you buy: it could turn out to worth its weight in gold. However, you don’t have to pay $599 for it at the dealership when you can get it at your local credit union for $150. Basically, GAP insurance satisfies the car loan in the event of theft or total loss. Your insurance company will only pay ACV for your loss, but GAP insurance picks up the “negative equity” you have remaining on your loan. For example: My car is worth $11,000, but I owe $16,000. In the event of a total loss of my car, the insurance company will only pay my lender $11,000 towards the loan leaving me having to come out of my pocket $5000 to satisfy the loan. However, GAP insurance pays the difference and I’m off Scott free to go buy a new car free and clear of any additional payment on the lost car.

Protect.Jpg

A person with good credit should never have to put a down payment towards the purchase of a new car. However, there are some instances where it may be a necessary (too much negative equity in trade, personal need to lower monthly note, etc). But typically, if a customer is satisfied with their payment, and they don’t have a significant amount of negative equity, then the bank should have no problem lending money to a well qualified buyer. Sometimes a salesman or sales manager will say ‘The lender is requiring 20% down,” or they might say “You’re going to have to pay your taxes in cash. The bank will finance the car, but they will not finance any taxes or fees.” This is a lie. If you can secure your own financing (personal bank, credit union, etc) before you buy, then that would be in your best interest and eliminate a lot of the shenanigans that can happen at the dealership. Additionally, when the sales managers offer is itemized with a down payment and payment listed, the payment- more times than not- can be retained without the requested money down. Down payments usually result in sheer profit for the dealership.

Car-Loan-With-Bad-Credit-And-No-Down-Payment-Money-Advice.Jpg

This little gem is another reason car dealers get a bad rap. When a sales manager submits your application to lenders for approval, the lenders will reply with what’s called a “call back.” The “call back” details the requirements for the loan. Example: let’s say the sales manager submits the numbers to a prime lender- we’ll use BB & T- for approval. BB & T will reply with terms (24/36/48/60/72 months), maximum amount financed, stip’s (proof of income, proof or residency, references, etc), and what’s called a “buy rate.” The “buy rate” is the interest rate the lender has approved for the loan- let’s use 7.9%. Well, here’s where the finance manager can steal from you. Typically, the lender will allow the dealership to make 2 points of rate if you’re still ok with the payment. That means the rate you’ve earned is 7.9%, but the dealer can contract you at 9.9% and the bank will pay the dealer the overage from the rate. This puts LOTS of cash in their pockets. Next time you buy a car and finance with one of the dealerships banks ask the finance manager to see the call back from the bank and compare that rate with the interest rate he’s trying to sign you up for. If he refuses, then he’s holding points of rate and he doesn’t want you to see that he’s trying to get you to pay a higher rate.

Microsoft announced a 10% increase in revenue for its fourth quarter of 2013 on Thursday, bringing in a revenue of $19.90 billion, up from the same period last year. But the numbers missed expectations of $20.72 billion and caused the stock to drop 3% amid the news.

Microsoft also reported a net income of $4.97 billion. The company said the results include a $900 million charge related to Surface RT inventory adjustments.

“While our fourth-quarter results were impacted by the decline in the PC market, we continue to see strong demand for our enterprise and cloud offerings, resulting in a record unearned revenue balance this quarter. We also saw increasing consumer demand for services like Office 365, Outlook.com, Skype, and Xbox LIVE,” said Amy Hood, chief financial officer at Microsoft, in a statement. “While we have work ahead of us, we are making the focused investments needed to deliver on long-term growth opportunities like cloud services.”

Although Microsoft noted it is making money from smartphones, revenue from its software and patent royalties from its Android devices were combined for the results.

“Windows Phone revenue, reflecting patent licensing revenue and sales of Windows Phone licenses, increased $222 million for the quarter,” Microsoft noted.
